Urban moss upcycling and education for the Pacific Northwest
Moss rescue and rehabilitation
Many see moss as the intruder or the enemy of a beautifully-manicured lawn. In fact, Americans spend millions of dollars each year on chemicals to get rid of moss. But moss, once you get to know it, is a remarkable friend, worthy of rescue, rehabilitation, and reuse in Pacific Northwest lawns and gardens. It’s a process we call moss upcycling.
Rescue
In the Pacific Northwest, moss is everywhere, often in unwanted places. Rather than destroy it with chemicals or pressure wash it into oblivion, it can be rescued and re-used in eco-friendly ways. Did you know that moss absorbs more carbon from the environment than trees?
Rehabilitate
Moss doesn’t have roots. So unwanted moss can be easily rescued from parking lots, construction sites, sidewalks, shaded-logging roads, roofs, even fire hydrants. It can be scraped up with a paint scraper and transported to lawns and gardens to enjoy a new, productive life.
Relax
You don’t have to mow moss. Or treat it with fertilizer. Or tell the neighborhood kids to get off of it. Once moss is in place, you can relax, let it grow at its own pace, walk on it, and appreciate its soothing and imperfect qualities. It’s what the Japanese call “wabi-sabi” - the appreciation of the beauty of imperfection.
