Bryophyte LLC is a family-owned startup in Seattle, Washington, dedicated to upcycling urban moss in the Pacific Northwest. We believe that unwanted urban moss, like the moss on this fire hydrant, can be rescued and put to good use in lawns and gardens in the greater Seattle area. Moss trivia
Moss is eco-friendly and doesn’t need to be mowed. According to Annie Martin in the Magical World of Moss Gardening, lawn mowers are responsible for five percent of the air pollution generated in the United States.
Moss doesn’t require any special fertilizer or chemicals. It just grows. According to the Magical World of Moss Gardening, North Americans spend more than $40 billion dollars each year to keep grass lawns looking good.
Moss was on the planet before the dinosaurs and has far outlived them. I just accept this as fact.
Moss is revered in Japan and carpets the famous Zen Saihoji temple in Kyoto. The temple is also known as a Koke-Dera or Moss Temple.
Moss captures carbon and filters pollution. Dresden-based Green City Solutions' CityTree claims to do the work of 275 trees in one per cent of the space.
Mosses can absorb water like a sponge and help to prevent soil erosion. Some mosses, like Sphagnums, can absorb up from 20-30 times their weight.
The name bryophyte, (pronounced brī-ə-ˌfīt), is a term often used interchangeably with moss. More formally, bryophyte is defined as any of a division (Bryophyta) of nonflowering plants comprising the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts.
